Clash of the Titans: How IPR Royalties Will Determine WiMAX vs. LTE

IPR used in 802.16e mobile WiMAX is diverse and is expected to result in low IPR royalty structure. But as the standard progresses to 802.16m more overlap of technology has occurred between 3G-LTE. Meanwhile, LTE is shaping up to require licensing from key IPR stakeholders with stated goals that accumulate to several percent. This session looks at how IPR is developing within and between the two camps and how this might affect system and end user device costs and competition.

  • Who holds IPR - for WiMAX? - for LTE? Areas of common IPR
  • Can IPR licensing be confined to chip suppliers or will multi-tiered licensing occur?
  • The foreseen impact on system and subscriber unit pricing and how this impacts embedded device costs
  • Forecasts for expected royalties for WiMAX and for LTE
  • How will IPR affect technology choice in China, India and other major markets?
  • Why IPR helps China become a major supplier in LTE-TDD

Robert Syputa, Senior Analyst, Maravedis

Driving Progress to Enable Roaming Within WiMAX Networks and With Other Mobile Platforms

  • Mobile network usage pattern mutations
  • Population demographics and trends
  • Strategic ecosystem: regulators, operators and institutions
  • Need for interoperability and unified standards
  • Roaming for 3G/WiFI/WiMAX needs to be in place from the outset
  • Key factors for successful roaming: ease of use: ubiquitous coverage, quality and price

Strategies for Successful Positioning of WiMAX in Emerging Markets

At first glance, emerging markets appear to be ripe for WiMAX, accounting for a large share of total WiMAX subscribers and deployments to date. In this session, Pyramid Research takes a closer look at the competitive landscape in these markets and the go-to-market strategies of commercial operators, highlighting what works and what doesn’t as well as the pain points and the keys to success for WiMAX operators. Specifically, the session addresses the following:

  • Is WiMAX a suitable technology for emerging markets? How large is the opportunity?
  • What types of service providers have adopted WiMAX?
  • What are the profiles of target subscribers, and what is the pace of market uptake?
  • What lessons can be learned from commercial operations that can ease network deployment challenges, help build attractive WiMAX-based services and accelerate adoption rates?

Dan Locke, Senior Analyst, Pyramid Research
